Penguins sign goaltender

The
Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Brad Thiessen to a two-year
entry-level contract through the 2011 season, it was announced today
by Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Thiessen, 23, played all 41 games in net with the Northeastern Huskies
this season, finishing with a record of 25-12-4. He recorded a 2.12
goals-against average and a .931 save percentage while collecting
three assists for the Huskies. His 2.09 goals-against average and
.932 save percentage were a personal best during the Hockey East
2008-09 campaign. Thiessen became only the second player in Northeastern
history to be named a top-three finalist for the Hobey Baker Award
which will be given to the best US college hockey player. He was
the first-ever Huskie named Hockey East Player of the Year and was
the only unanimous selection for the Hockey East All-Star team.
The 6-0, 172 pound goaltender played three seasons with Northeastern
appearing in net in 110 of 111 contests. He finished with an overall
record of 52-46-12 along with a 2.40 goals-against average and a
.922 save percentage. Thiessen set a Northeastern record earning
eight-career shutouts from 2006 to 2009 as a Huskie. He has a 2.32
goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 80-career games
of Hockey East play over three seasons, finishing with a winning
record of 39-30-10, including an 18-6-3 mark during the 2008-09
season.
Prior to Northeastern, the native of Aldergrove, British Columbia,
split three seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL)
between the Penticton Panthers, the Prince George Spruce Kings and
the Merritt Centennials from 2003 to 2006. Thiessen will join the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL).
